It’s great to revisit it, and Jacobi’s narration is firm and faultless. I read the novel as a child and still vividly recall the experience. The setting is key to the sense of growing dread. It’s a great mix of myth and murder - and still has the power to hold your fascination, decades after it was published.

Much of the action is narrated by Watson in the form of letters to Holmes, updating him on the latest revelations. Holmes is called to the desolate moorland of Grimpen Mire where he finds a kind of twisted version of Wuthering Heights - aristocrats and oddballs living in an inhospitable wilderness. But this is a novel, not a short story, and a fuller exploration of some classic Doyle preoccupations, including disputed inheritances, family loyalty, or more exactly disloyalty, and a suggestion of supernatural goings-on. When a young heir inherits a noble title that apparently has a deadly curse to it, Sherlock Holmes is hired to investigate. There are some parallels with Baskervilles. Holmes has encountered deadly creatures on his adventures before, most memorably in the case of the Speckled Band - when a swamp adder was revealed as the killer. Can it really be that the grisly legend of the Hound of the Baskervilles might have something to do with the case Holmes will have none of it, but even he must accept that dark forces are at work.
